Life size CO2 training plant under construction

Life size CO2 training plant under construction

A life size CO2 training plant is under construction at the OTTC training centre in Springs. All the components and equipment have been generously donated by suppliers and much of the required labour for assembly has been done by German contacts.

The cascade plant has R134a for the high stage condensing and can operate as sub-critical or trans-critical and will be piped to a small cold room and supermarket vending cabinets. The plant will be used to train students in the design, installation and operation of CO2 systems and the different options in capacity control.

Christian Richter (the winner of the German 2009 Skills competition and third place in 2011 Euroskills) and his father, Wolfgang, both from contractors Dreshner Kuhlanlagenbau in Germany, recently spent three weeks at OTTC doing additional work on the installation of the CO2 training plant.

The CO2 plant is expected to be completed in June 2017. The new CO2 training plant will further expand the training courses offered at the OTTC college, which also has a life size ammonia training plant, perhaps the only one in South Africa.
