In memory of Dave Mathers

Dave Mathers (19 April 1944) of AMS sadly passed away on 12 July and will be dearly missed by his friends, family and colleagues.

In 1977, Dave came to South Africa (from the UK) and went to Durban to follow a woman he had previously met on a passenger liner.

Dave’s involvement in the fan industry started with joining Air Steel in Milner Road, Paarden Eiland in the sheet metal department. The company was owned by Bruno Reuggie. Ray Miller later joined Air Steel and started making fans.

Together they formed Luft Industries. In 1994, Ray Miller left Luft Industries and the company was sold to the Blue Circle Group. In 1995, Dave Mathers (Pty) Ltd was formed as a fan supplier and was joined by Ray Ball and Duncan Burl. And the company later become Elta Fans. The company operated from Jig Avenue in Montague Gardens and Dave later became MD of Elta Fans which was part of the Elta Group Africa.

The Africa Group comprised of AMS, Air Movement Equipment, Hydor, Q-Tech and Elta Fans.

Throughout his career in the Elta Group, Dave was highly regarded by his colleagues and management for his ability to tackle whatever came his way or ‘no problem, it will be sorted’. The company moved into its present premises in Montague Gardens in April 2000 and that’s where Dave remained until he retired on 30 April 2009.

After retirement, he was a regular visitor to AMS in Montague Gardens and stayed in very close contact with all his previous work colleagues.

Sadly, after a short illness and time spent in hospital, he passed away unexpectedly on 12 July 2017.

Dave leaves behind a long legacy in the fan industry and our deepest sympathy goes to his wife Valerie.
